Surf Report Tuesday Sept. 28

Right now the surf is blown out with a wind out of the ESE at 10-15 mph. Good news is the wind is going to shift in the next day and is going to help us out with the incoming swell. Water is getting chilly so don't forget we have the best boots and gloves on the market. Come get them before they are gone!

More to come later in the day so do yourself a favor and check back in!!

Until then keep an eye on it and I'll see you in the water this week.

Surf Report Mon Sept. 27

It's raining and windy here on the seacoast this morning and it doesn't look like it is going to let up anytime soon. The wind is out of the NE at 8-12 mph and there is a junky knee to waist high wave out front. If you really need to check it then you know where to look, protection is key today everyone and there are some places out there that just might be working. The air and water are getting chilly so what that means is boots!

We have a wide selection of sizes from 3mm-7mm from O'Neill and Rip Curl. It's almost time for gloves and right now we have a full size run of 2mm from Rip Curl.

As of today, a 3mm boot is going to work just fine, and we have a great offering from O'Neill. It is the Heat Round Toe. It features a Fluid Foam exterior and interior, glued and blindstitched seams, and a durable rubber sole.

O'Neill Heat 3mm Round Toe
$48

And once the cold comes in, we have two other great offerings from O'Neill.

O'Neill Psychofreak 5.5mm Split Toe
$79.95

This is the boot that I surf all winter and love it. It has the best grip out there and is the most durable boot I have surfed. It features XDS-Air Insulated Neoprene on the exterior and UltraFlex XDS Air Firewall on the interior. It also features External Fluid Seam Weld, Interior Taped Seams, Anti Flush Shin Strap, Deep Split Toe for Improved Balance, and a Leash Stop Toe Guard.

And for the dead of winter we have the 7mm offering

O'Neill Heat 7mm Round Toe
$65

If you need overall warmth then this is the boot for you. 7mm of comfort for your feet's pleasure. This boot features Fluid Foam on the exterior and the interior. Glued and Blindstitched Seams, and a durable rubber sole. Great for those who's feet get really cold

We do have more styles from Rip Curl, but I do need to keep you coming in so swing on down and try some on. You won't regret it!

And if you are in the mood for some nice fall gloves for your fingers, then come down and grab a pair!!

Rip Curl E3Bomb 2mm 5 finger
$40

These gloves are great for the beginning of fall. They are made out of 100% E3 superstretch neoprene, they have fully sealed seams and external tape, along with a silicone palm grip so you don't loose your board. These gloves are extremely light and they are by far the most flexible gloves that I have put on. Come check them out.

Thats all today gang, thanks for reading and all the comments. Surf is looking good later in the week as long as the wind helps us out. Keep your eye on it, I promise I will be doing the same.

See you in the water!!

'The Wave,' by Susan Casey

So today I am giving thanks to Ryan, who has alerted me to what looks like a fantastic read. I am yet to see this book, and I have to admit that I am a little ashamed that I have not yet taken the time to research or read what looks to be a tremendous story. Here is a brief description of what Ryan was talking about...

"From Susan Casey, bestselling author of The Devils" Teeth, comes an astonishing book about colossal, ship-swallowing rogue waves and the surfers who seek them out. For centuries, mariners have spun tales of gargantuan waves, 100-feet high or taller. Until recently scientists dismissed these stories-waves that high would seem to violate the laws of physics. But in the past few decades, as a startling number of ships vanished and new evidence has emerged, oceanographers realized something scary was brewing in the planet's" waters. They found their proof in February 2000, when a British research vessel was trapped in a vortex of impossibly mammoth waves in the North Sea-including several that approached 100 feet. As scientists scramble to understand this phenomenon, others view the giant waves as the ultimate challenge. These are extreme surfers who fly around the world trying to ride the ocean's" most destructive monsters. The pioneer of extreme surfing is the legendary Laird Hamilton, who, with a group of friends in Hawaii, figured out how to board suicidally large waves of 70 and 80 feet. Casey follows this unique tribe of surfers as they seek to conquer the holy grail of their sport, a 100 foot wave. In this mesmerizing account, the exploits of Hamilton and his fellow surfers are juxtaposed against scientist" urgent efforts to understand the destructive powers of waves-from the tsunami that wiped out 250,000 people in the Pacific in 2004 to the 1,740-foot-wave that recently leveled part of the Alaskan coast. Like Jon Krakauerrs"s Into Thin Air, The Wave brilliantly portrays human beings confronting nature at its most ferocious."

And here is the Author herself!

So again, thank you Ryan for opening my eyes to a new read, I am already so stoked to go pick it up and get on it. To be honest I think I am going to send my girlfriend to Borders today to grab it for me!!! Once I'm done I will let all of you know what I think!

And since we are on the topic of books today, (man I love books, TV is so bogus) I should share with you an amazing website that you may or may not know of. It is http://www.surfbooks.com/ This site has every book you could possibly imagine. It is absolutely fantastic and everyone out there needs to get on it and start expanding your mind. READ READ READ!!!

In other news the

Quiksilver Pro France  is ON in Pumping Conditions at Culs Nus Beach check it here http://surf.co.nz/news/world-news/2010/9/1574-quiksilver-pro-france-pumping-conditions-culs-nus-

They are also broadcasting live so if you are waiting for football get on your computer and check it out.

Surf is flat today with winds out of the NNW at 5 mph. Could see a pulse on Wed-Thurs so keep an eye on it. Thanks for reading and just remember READ READ READ is the theme of the day. So do yourself a favor, toss your TV out the window and pick up a book!!

Peace and Love

Jamie O'Brien

So, "Who is JOB" that's the question that many people have been asking for a long time. Finally the answer that we have all been seeking is going to be released to the world on Oct. 7. I know I am more than stoked on this movie especially since it is being released to the world on the heels of the Iron's Brothers Production's "Scratching the Surface," which features the life and travels of one Julian Wilson. People are already saying that it is movie of the year, and one of the best they have ever seen. I have already seen it, and I have to tell you, I was more than impressed. The sound track is killer, the waves and travel are epic, and above all the cinematography is second to none. In my eyes as of right now, it is the best movie that I have seen. So for your viewing pleasure I have attached the trailer to "Who is JOB." I love discussions so I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts. I decided not to attach "Scratching the Surface" because you can run down to the local shop and pick it up, and it is one that is a MUST HAVE in your collection. So here you go, sit back and see what you think...

On another note, the Easterns have been going off all week. The best of the best were invited down to Hatteras for the final comp of the year, and boy did they score. Some of the young guns rode to impress and it looks to me like there are some future superstars out there in the making. To be able to prove yourself in hurricane swell is a once in a life time opportunity for a lot of riders, and that's exactly what they got. You can check out all the action right here http://surf.transworld.net/1000115154/features/the-youth-has-arrived-at-easterns/

So please don't be afraid to post your opinions, I promise I will answer them, and please tell me what your favorite surf movie is. I can't wait to hear what people are into and enjoy watching. Who knows maybe someone out there has a flick in their collection that you have never heard of. Oh and Fast Times at Ridgemont High doesn't count as a surf movie......or does it????

That's all for today gang, again, the water is basically flat, so come on down check out some SUP's and long skates, or just swing in to say hi, I am here till 7!!

As always be positive and I'll see you in the water!

Even when it's this flat, there is always something to do. Today was my day to get reacquainted to Super Brand. This is a new up and coming brand that is doing it right. They have three of the hottest surfers out there backing their brand and killing it at the same time. The proof is in the pudding people. http://www.superbranded.com/ So I have found a little snip it of what super is all about so sit back and enjoy....

Hurricane Bill: Garrett McNamara SUP surfing RI - Stand Up Paddle in HD

One more thing for today. This is what is capable of SUP's here on the North East. Just do us all a favor and if your in an actual lineup please don't use the size of the board to your advantage. Even though he is a "pro" there needs to be some sort of order and you need to know that you have to give up the set waves and not be greedy. Just remember, people are looking for an excuse to hate on SUP's so don't give them one, be respectful!!

USED BOARDS!!!!!!!!

Not to much out front today gang. We are looking at knee high LB sets at best. The wind is light out of the NNW, high tide is @ 12:30 and low is at 6:30. Water temp is hovering around 58-60 so boots and or gloves might be appropriate if you really need to get wet. Full selection of Rip Curl and O'Neill boots and gloves are here so come get some before they are gone!

So today is the day for some SUP action. For those of you who have been wondering what this new phenomena is all about, today would be a great day to come on in and try one out. We have daily rentals here at the shop, and also down at our bagel shop, the Surfing Bagel located on Salisbury Beach. SUP's are a great way to stay out on the ocean on flat days and incorporate daily exercise into your life. Anyone that enjoys being healthy and fit, but hates the crowd's, smell and persona of the gym, would love getting on an SUP. They are peaceful, fun and a killer work out. Plus on days like today you might just be able to catch a little knee high wave!! Prices start at $1099 and run upwards from there depending on performance and size. Right now in the shop we do have an SUP on consignment. It is a 9'2" Riviera Paddle Surf  "NUGG" with a 5 box set up. As of right now it is set us as a 2 + 1 so it is extremely versatile in waves. So if you are looking for a killer deal for a wave catching SUP then swing on down. This board comes with board bag, full carbon paddle, and paddle bag. The asking price right now for the whole shibang is only $1250!!

Right now we also have a great selection of used short boards in our surfboard loft. If you need to gear up and grab a great used winter board we have you covered. Here are just few little nuggets to get your attention!

JC Hawaii SD-3
6'3" x 18.15" x 2.2"
This board has only been ridden twice and is basically brand new
$499

JC Hawaii NX 1
7'2" x 18.4" x 2.4
Pintail gun for your big point breaks or indo
$599

Bourton Shapes PS 30
6'5" x 18 3/4" x 2.7"
This board is BRAND NEW and all we are asking is
$450

As always there are more in the shop, but the only way to know if we have the right board for you is to come down and check them out for yourself!

Thats all for today folks, I am here until 6 today so come on down, share the stoke, and check out some new to you boards and get ready for winter surf. As always, be true to yourself and good things will follow. See you on the water!

Surf Report Wed. Sept 22

Good morning all, as you probably already know that swell that never really showed up has already faded to knee to thigh high at best. There are still some logging sets out there to be had so if you need to get wet get on it. The tides low today at around 5:30 so there might still be some leftovers out there with the incoming. As far as swell for the rest of the week it doesn't look good. There is a possibility of a knee high wind swell Saturday and some waves on Sunday but I'm not making any promises. Just keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best, and remember that when it's flat we here at Zapstix have all your long skate needs covered.

Speaking of those needs, did you know that we are a fully authorized dealer of bern head protection? For any of you out there that don't know, bern is a local company that prides it's self on grass roots movements and giving back to the community and all the people that spread the good word and vibe. Head protection is a hot topic in the action sports industry right now, and for good reason. Kids are going bigger than ever before and the progression is just unbelievable. I will be the first one to admit that when I'm doing anything but surfing, I am wearing a helmet. Not just any helmet, but a bern. They are made with all the newest technology on the market. They are some of the lightest and defiantly the most stylish helmets out there. So please do them, us, and above all your head a favor and check them out at http://www.bernunlimited.com/ .  We also have a full line of bern audio and outerwear in stock. So if you want to get berned and snag one of those hoodies and flat brims that you see kicking around this area come on down and just say hi!!

In other news, our shipment of fall and winter rubber has been released and is expected by the end of the week or early next week. So for those of you who have put off buying that new suit the time is now. We are gong to be receiving the best of the best from Rip Curl and O'neill including the best 4/3 I have ever surfed, The Mutant. The Mutant is by far the most versatile suit on the market. It has sealed seams to keep you in the water longer, but it also has a detachable hood. That alone should be enough for anyone out there. For those chilly mornings when you need your dome piece warm you have a hood, and once it warms up you can run up to the car and zip on your crew collar. See two suits in one!!

I also received two boxes from Rip Curl yesterday containing the latest in mens fall fashion. We have flannels, hoodies, track jackets and some late release tee's. This is just the beginning of our fall season so expect more style from Rip Curl and O'neill as the fall rolls on.

And for all you ladies out there, a full line of Roxy and O'Neill denim has arrived!!! We have also received brand new hoodies, jackets, and sweats so what ever you need to keep you warm on these perfect fall night, we have you covered. But with fall comes the end of summer. What does this mean? Well guys it means the end of bikini season. Bummer I know, but ladies what this means to you is all bikinis are 1/2 off!!! Thats right, I said 1/2 off!!! We still have a ton of styles, sizes and colors left, so if you want to gear up cheap for next summer come on down and try some on!

Thats it for today folks enjoy the rest of the picks of the shop and I'm outta here to go catch some logging sets. As always take care, be good to your neighbor and i'll see you in the water!!!
